But the company has never actually promised that the various offerings on Disney Plus would remain there indefinitely. Where companies like HBO and Netflix put out monthly bulletins of everything coming to and leaving their streaming services each month, so viewers can plan their last-minute binges, Disney has only emphasized new arrivals, not departures. Many fans are surprised by films dropping off the service, particularly since Disney hasn’t issued press releases about the changes. All these titles disappeared without warning, and so far, Disney has not commented on the titles. Dolittle, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Home Alone and Home Alone 2, and The Sandlot are no longer streamable on Disney Plus. In fact, as 2020 began, some Disney Plus users noticed that a few films had gone missing from the streaming library. Some films clearly aren’t going to live on Disney Plus forever. That doesn’t apply to every movie on the service, however. But with its new streaming service, Disney promised that all its classics would be permanently available to subscribers. It was a smart way to drive interest in Disney’s release schedule for DVDs and Blu-rays: Whenever a beloved film emerged from the Vault, consumers, collectors, and resellers would rush to buy it, assuming their opportunities to own it would be limited. For years, the Vault was where Disney put films between waves of releases, so some classic titles would be unavailable for long periods. The original story for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was set to continue this relationship, where Philip has become a cartographer who is searching for Syrena, who went back to the sea. Their story ended on something of a cliffhanger in the fourth entry, with Syrena pulling a wounded Philip underwater with her, seemingly healing his injuries. The romance between Syrena and missionary Philip (Sam Claflin) formed a big part of Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, replacing the Will/Elizabeth love story from the first three entries. This draft also featured the return of mermaid Syrena (Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey) from Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. This version was reportedly rejected by Depp for featuring a female villain dubbed Sea Widow, which he felt was too similiar to Eva Green's witch antagonist from Dark Shadows. The development of the sequel's screenplay was tangled, with franchise screenwriter Terry Rossio penning the original draft. The MacGuffin of the film is the Trident of Poseidon, which basically grants control over the sea. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales from 2017 is the most recent entry, and featured Jack Sparrow teaming up with Henry Turner, the son of original franchise heroes Will and Elizabeth Swann. The studio was seriously concerned about star Johnny Depp's eccentric lead performance, which he famously modeled on Keith Richards, but this proved to be the movie's ace in the hole. They eventually rolled the dice on a big-budget version with a major cast, with Pirates Of The Caribbean hitting screens in 2003.
